Welcome to Common Gunsense

I hope this blog will provoke some thoughtful reflection about the issue of guns and gun violence. I am passionate about the issue and would love to change some misperceptions and the culture of gun violence in America by sharing with readers words, photos, videos and clips from articles to promote common sense about gun issues. Many of you will agree with me- some will not. I am only one person but one among many who think it's time to do something about this national problem. The views expressed by me in this blog do not represent any group with which I am associated but are rather my own personal opinions and thoughts.

100,000 viewers

Thanks everyone. As of today, my blog has had over 100,000 views since I started blogging last May! Many of my viewers are who I call "gun guys" with an occasional woman. But then, I have found that some of the women are actually men commenting as avatars of themselves. Whatever. Many comment anonymously for whatever reason. Some don't want to reveal their URL or their name. Some of you want to remain anonymous so you can attack me with impunity. Whatever. A few of you on my side of the issue have been brave enough to wade in but it's a tough thing to do because of all of the angry, rude comments received so I understand that you don't care to comment. As I have said many times, though, the majority of people believe in what I am doing and believe in common sense. I believe that what I am doing is right for the country and for public safety.

The gun control groups are gathering more support and gaining momentum as more of us are blogging, writing on national media sites, traveling the country for Fix Gun Checks getting the message out about background checks, appearing in films ( Colin Goddard and Living for 32 and the upcoming Gun Fight film running on HBO this Wednesday, April 13), doing interviews on national news programs, holding press conferences and appearing at Congressional and state legislative hearings. There has been a lot of press attention to the issue of gun violence after the January 8th shooting in Tucson and the recent 30th anniversary of the shooting of Jim Brady on March 30th. Mayors and Police Chiefs are speaking out. Victims are speaking out.

So again, thanks for reading and occasionally having an adult conversation. Some of you are no longer commenting because of the nature of your remarks but others have joined along the way. This is not a place for rude and personal attacks. It is not a place for name calling, demeaning, obnoxious, immature, accusatory or provocative remarks. It is a place for a common sense view of the gun issue and a hope that common sense will break out miraculously in the halls of Congress and state legislatures.

  1. Joan, you've said that you are in favor of reasonable regulations. Other than the regulations struck in Heller and McDonald, can you tell us what regulations you would consider *unreasonable*?

  2. I have posted such things many times on this blog. There aren't very many unreasonable regulations conerning guns and who can buy and carry them and where they can be carried. We need more of the reasonable gun laws that keep people who shouldn't have guns from getting them.

  3. Repeal the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. Draft resolution and legislation is at http://www.mjbarkl.com/run.htm . Join me, run for Congress, fix this.
    Best wishes, --Mike

  4. I generally don't publish things for people running for office but thought I would do this since Mike has sent some things before. You can decide for yourselves about his platform. I do not endorse candidates on this blog.

  5. Well Mike at least you are an honest gun grabber! I do not see a snowballs chance in hell you could pull that off though.

  6. I'm endorsing Mike on my blog, if you can consider my remark, "I love this guy," an endorsement.

Congratulation on the 100,000. You've really worked for it. I'm glad you don't seem to be getting discouraged by the bombardment. You're doing a great service.

  7. I note, joan, that a few days ago you got to 100,000 views. I hope it becomes 500,000.

We "gun guys" couldn't ask for a better advocate for our cause. For your positions, based on emotion, illogic, and sensationalism are routinely exposed here. I note - and I know, because it's happened to me - that posts that you cannot respond to are simply buried, and then selectively quoted. Others notice, too.

Keep it up, Joan. I wish you well. And the trend of liberty will continue to grow.

  8. I imagine you are quite sure that all the views are coming from the gun guys which is absolutely not true. I am not writing for you guys. I am writing to get others involved and activated and that is what is happening actually. You have no idea who is reading and letting me know they agree with me because they are afraid to make comments on the blog. They know that you guys will tear into them. Who wants or needs that? Thanks for the encouragement though. I will keep it up and rest assured, I have a lot of support for what I am doing.
