Welcome to Common Gunsense

I hope this blog will provoke some thoughtful reflection about the issue of guns and gun violence. I am passionate about the issue and would love to change some misperceptions and the culture of gun violence in America by sharing with readers words, photos, videos and clips from articles to promote common sense about gun issues. Many of you will agree with me- some will not. I am only one person but one among many who think it's time to do something about this national problem. The views expressed by me in this blog do not represent any group with which I am associated but are rather my own personal opinions and thoughts.

Gun coincidence?

Well, it was just a matter of time before we heard that someone got pretty close to President Obama with a gun in hand. Yesterday, a man named Joseph McVey ( I'm not making that up) was arrested with a rifle in hand and a car equipped with sirens and strobe lights. He said he just wanted to "talk" to the President. Right. Questions will be asked and hopefully there will be answers. McVey was driving a car with strobe lights as if to be a law enforcement officer. He had an invalid Ohio drivers' license and directions for rifle scopes. Why? Where did he get his gun? If you remember my blog from yesterday when I wrote about the man who thought law enforcement officers are all evil, one wonders if we have another paranoid person who wants to impersonate those who they think are a threat to them and the country. Or does this man have some other agenda or other problems? Time will tell.

I have long been concerned about the safety of President Obama and other elected leaders in this over-heated political environment. As I have discussed, it is necessary for those who have the bully pulpit to speak out against fear mongering, hate talk and hyperbole. There is no place for that in a democratic country with free elections and free speech. There will always be those who disagree and those who are fearful and we all know that people make threats against any sitting President. All it takes is one nut case or one paranoid individual to cause a national tragedy. Inaction is not an option but inaction is what we currently have. We must make attempts to deal with our culture of fascination and love of guns that leads to loose gun laws. The gun lobby wins when inaction about sensible gun laws is the operational mode. Common sense is the answer.
