Welcome to Common Gunsense

I hope this blog will provoke some thoughtful reflection about the issue of guns and gun violence. I am passionate about the issue and would love to change some misperceptions and the culture of gun violence in America by sharing with readers words, photos, videos and clips from articles to promote common sense about gun issues. Many of you will agree with me- some will not. I am only one person but one among many who think it's time to do something about this national problem. The views expressed by me in this blog do not represent any group with which I am associated but are rather my own personal opinions and thoughts.

Fools in April

On this day when we celebrate fools and playing tricks on each other, I wish what I heard last night on a news show had been a trick. The Second Amendment/Open Carry people are planning 2 rallies in our near D.C. on April 19th. One will be on the Mall area at the Washington Monument where guns are not allowed. Let's hope the folks who plan to come understand that. Loaded pistols will be allowed at the rally in a park in Virginia where folks will gather to defend their rights to own guns and to openly carry them. I read that there are strict rules about how one can carry their guns. Shotguns cannot be loaded and must be carried over the shoulder, pointed down. Ammunition can be carried. Also, guns can't be pointed in a threatening way towards anyone. On one of the websites, I read a comment that intimated that surely their rally would be infiltrated by some liberals who would shoot off a gun just to cause trouble for them all.

April is a violent month: Virginia Tech shooting on April 16th; Columbine shooting on April 20th; Waco confrontation ending in the loss of life on April 19th; Oklahoma City bombing on April 19th. It is not insignificant that the Open Carry/Second Amendment folks have chosen April 19th as their day to protest against the government. Where will this all lead? Surely officials will be watching these groups carefully. They are an angry bunch when reading their websites and a scary bunch. While reading this one from " The Tree of Liberty" , I got a chilly feeling all over. And this one calling for restoring the Constitution made me wonder what our country is all about.

Stay tuned for more developments in April and hope that there will be no incidents of violence. Watch the video I have posted from the Rachel Maddow show about these upcoming events.
