Welcome to Common Gunsense

I hope this blog will provoke some thoughtful reflection about the issue of guns and gun violence. I am passionate about the issue and would love to change some misperceptions and the culture of gun violence in America by sharing with readers words, photos, videos and clips from articles to promote common sense about gun issues. Many of you will agree with me- some will not. I am only one person but one among many who think it's time to do something about this national problem. The views expressed by me in this blog do not represent any group with which I am associated but are rather my own personal opinions and thoughts.

Guns, guns everywhere- point is made

I have noticed that more and more of the media are talking about the increased threats and ugly rhetoric surrounding the health care debate. At the same time, more and more people think they ought to be able to carry their guns everywhere. Today, a friend made a wry statement on his Facebook page- he encouraged us all to ask for guns at swimming pools this summer for all those who risk their lives while swimming. In addition, he encouraged us to ask that hospital patients be allowed to have their guns in their rooms so they can make a point about their health care. Of course, this is extreme. But if we are to believe that guns protect us wherever we go and that we need them to be wherever we go, then one could make the argument that we need guns at swimming pools and in hospitals- just in case. Guns do make a point when openly carried in public places. When pictures of guns are put on signs at tea party rallies, we get the point. But what's the end result? So far, nothing tragic has happened. Why take the chance?
